KEYPOINTS

  • 01

Who you become matters more than what you acquire

Looking back at 72, Oprah says what she has acquired isn't as remarkable as who she has become, and she is most proud of the woman she is now. Her opening message: everyone has the power to fulfil 'the fullest expression of yourself as a human being.' She calls Earth a school where we all teach and learn, and believes everyone came here to serve. She also credits 25 years at number one to never seeing a difference between herself and her audience. She saw herself as their surrogate voice.

  • 02

You have an inner GPS, and her first memory of hearing it was at four or five

Oprah describes a voice or feeling that guides her. Her only conscious memory of first hearing it is from early childhood in rural Mississippi, churning butter on the back porch while her grandmother hung sheets she'd brought home from the white families she worked for. When her grandmother said 'you better watch me, one day you're going to have to do this', a feeling told Oprah, 'No, you won't. This will not be your life.' She adds with a laugh: 'But don't tell her.'

  • 03

The noise of fear and people-pleasing drowns the whisper

Oprah admits there were long stretches when she couldn't hear that inner voice because fear and the 'disease to please' were so loud. Her test for whether you're on track is flow. Getting off centre and not listening shows up as disorder in every area, including your house, closets and car.

  • 04

Things happen for you without meaning you deserved them

When Oprah says things happen for a reason, she is careful to separate that from blame. She was raped at nine, and again at 10 and 14, and grew up poor in Mississippi where it was illegal for Black people to be on the street after dark. She says there is a reason for everything, but that doesn't make you responsible or mean it should have happened. A lonely childhood without validation at home drove her to become a talker and to excel at school, which became her calling.

Stop seeking 10-gallon love from pint-sized people

From a life class with T.D. Jakes that made her cry: some people are '10-gallon' people looking for 10 gallons of love, attention and acceptance from 'pint-sized' people who can't even carry a gallon. Recognising someone's capacity, rather than expecting what they can't give, is how she made peace with her mother long before her mother died.

  • 06

Intention is cause and effect: what you put out comes back

In the late 1980s Oprah read Gary Zukav's The Seat of the Soul. Its chapters on intention, linked to karma, cured her people-pleasing. If you say yes to please people, they feel that intention. After 1989 every show was designed around one intention: give viewers an aha moment that could change their direction.

  • 07

Bring intention to any job, even a boring one

If you're working just to make ends meet, Oprah says to let every step in that job be for the love of your family and never lose sight of that as you walk out the door. Purpose also lives in how you treat the person parking your car. That is your 'heart print'.

  • 08

Ask 'What do I really want?' and get specific

After shows, women would tell Oprah 'I just want to be happy'. When pressed, they could only point to their children's happiness. She pushes people to define the dream they hold in their own heart, not the one Instagram, X or Threads decided for them.

You always have the right to change your mind

Oprah calls ending her show and launching OWN one of the biggest mistakes of her life. Her inner voice was so strong she'd wake at night unable to breathe, saying 'don't do it'. But she'd already signed. She reveals she kept her word to please people outside her, not because she wanted to. In 2012, one of her worst years, every headline was about 'the struggling OWN network'. She says the question is who you're keeping your word to, the outside or the inside.

  • 10

Purpose is quiet, daily and bigger than you

Oprah says people stay stuck because they can't see their connection to something greater, and she insists your life isn't that small. People at church told her grandmother she had 'a talking child', and her purpose turned out to be using her voice. At 72 she asks 'How can I be used?' and treats life as if she has one solid decade left to deliver her message with clarity, love and no ego.

EXAMPLES

  • 01

The on-air humiliation she never got over

On a live show, a man revealed in front of the audience that a woman was pregnant, and the audience gasped. Oprah apologised to both afterwards and says the woman's humiliation 'still abides with me'. She told producers 'never again'. Her lesson is that the worst thing you can do is humiliate someone, so never criticise anyone in front of others.

  • 02

The car full of hair rollers

Driving a little Chevette, young Oprah did her hair on the way to work and threw the rollers in the back until the car was a wreck. Seeing it, she thought, 'This car represents my life right now.' She cleaned it out one roller at a time, finding quarters under the seat.

  • 03

Caroline Myss and 'spirit' in 1992

During a show with Caroline Myss (Anatomy of the Spirit), Oprah saw the audience had tuned out and stopped to ask why. They didn't know what 'spirit' meant ('Jesus? Moses?'). That led to segments called Remembering Your Spirit, explaining that you have a mind, a body and a spirit.

  • 04

    Mattie Stepanek's 'heart print'

Oprah learned the term from Mattie Stepanek, a young guest in a wheelchair who died at 13. Whenever you move someone, you leave a heart print. She pairs it with Maya Angelou's line that people remember how you made them feel.

  • 05

    Mel's 5:55 a.m. 'good morning'

Mel tells of smiling and saying good morning to a woman trudging across a crosswalk with her head down. The woman perked up. Mel's point is that a tiny exchange of energy can flip a switch in someone else.

  • 06

    The Sphere moment

Standing alone after U2's first show at the Las Vegas Sphere, Oprah felt the same feeling she had at five on the back porch. She takes it as a sign of being connected to the life force within her.

OTHER RELEVANT

  • 01

    Run a weekly 'whisper check'

Notice where your life feels out of flow (house, car, relationships, sleep) and ask what you're ignoring. Restore order one 'roller' at a time.

  • 02

Before saying yes, name your intention

Ask whether you're agreeing to please people or because you want to. Oprah's view is that the intention behind a yes shapes the result.

  • 03

    Right-size expectations of 'pint-sized' people

Stop going back to people for love they can't hold. Accept their capacity, find the 10 gallons elsewhere, and make peace on your own terms.

  • 04

    Give yourself a decade

Mel suggests stealing Oprah's frame at any age: what would you do with the next ten years if they were your window to deliver what you came to give?
